Traveling Austria & Slovenia

At the moment we are always somewhere between Austria and Slovenia. When the weather is good we swim at the Wörther See in Carinthia or go hiking there. We took the photo on Sunday during our hike to the Hohe Gloriette - a lookout point overlooking the Wörther See.

Also at the Millstätter See we stayed for one day.

On Friday we visited Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. With its many bridges and the river that runs through the middle of the city, it reminded us a lot of Amsterdam and Bruges. Unlike most European capitals, Ljubljana is a real metropolis of peace. We experienced the city as very relaxed and not hectic at all. We walked along the river, admired the beautiful house facades in the city center and on the riverbank and visited the famous three bridges, the Tromostovje.
Afterwards we enjoyed the view over the city from the castle.

On our way back we stopped again at Lake Bled, which I visited some years ago. I especially like the panorama of the surrounding mountains of the Julian Alps and the island of Bled, which is located in the middle of the lake and gives the lake its name and speciality. Also the beautiful wooden boats, with which you can make excursions on the lake, are characteristic and unique for this place. We also went to the Slovenian coast on the border with Trieste and visited the coastal towns of Koper, Izola, Portorož and Piran. From Koper and Izola we had hoped for something more, but the port and the promenade in Portoroz and especially the town of Piran impressed us very much. If you drive along the coast from Izola to Portorož or Piran, you should definitely stop at the bus stop on the steep coast behind Izola. From here you have a breathtaking view of the city of Izola. Here it is also possible to have a coffee on the panoramic terrace of the Hotel Cliff, where you can enjoy this great view.
For bathing there are even more suitable places at the Mediterranean Sea, for example in Italy, because there are no sandy beaches and the pebble beaches are also very sparse and therefore densely populated. It didn't turn out to be too clever to go there on weekends, because the beaches were very crowded and most of the guests seemed to be day visitors from Slovenia. But the cities with the pastel-colored house facades and the viewpoints with views over the red roofs, the sea and the steep coast were all the more beautiful. Our travel time in Bavaria

Murnau 30-08-2020

After a very eventful week in Bavaria we will continue our journey in southern Austria today. We enjoyed the time in the Bavarian Alps very much.

Already on our arrival we were very impressed by the picturesque pedestrian zone of Murnau am Staffelsee with its pretty houses and the view of the mountain scenery behind. Even though I was in Murnau once before as a child, I have now experienced the place again from a completely new perspective.

On the first day of our trip we hiked along the cow escape waterfalls in Farchant, which with a length of over 250 meters are among the highest waterfalls in Germany. The hike was very paradisiac, because we were accompanied by the constant rushing of the waterfall and there were relatively few tourists on the way. Also the ascent was easy to manage.

Afterwards we ate lasagna on the banks of the river Loisach and walked along the bank where we accidentally discovered a kind of tipi made of sticks.

The river lies in the middle of a beautiful mountain scenery surrounded by the Alps and shines in sunlight in a bright shade of blue, creating a unique contrast to the white pebbles on the edge of the riverbed.

On the following days we explored the Walchensee and the Eibsee by bike, which turned out to be a very good decision, as we were able to completely circle the lakes in a reasonable time and gather many unique impressions. The Walchensee has inspired us especially by its diversity. At every point the lake has a different shade of color from light blue and light green to turquoise and emerald green.

The Eibsee shines in an overground emerald green and reminded us very much of the Emerald Lake in the Banff-National Parc in Canada. Especially in the early morning hours - before the big stream of tourists is approaching - it is very idyllic there and you can really feel in harmony with nature. In the middle of the lake there are several small islands and from the upper circular path it looks as if they are surrounded by a light green edge in the water.

The mountain scenery of the Alps behind it, especially the Zugspitze - the highest mountain in Germany - round off the panorama and one enjoys a breathtaking backdrop, especially on the higher part of the circular trail above the lake. We decided not to take the cable car to the Zugspitze, because we want to train and hike up there in due course.To start with the training, we hiked through the Leutaschklamm on one of the next days which is partly on the German and partly on the Austrian side. The waterfall path, which leads through the middle of the high rock walls, was especially impressive.

We were also very impressed by the hiking trail through the Geisterklamm, which leads over bridges and paths above the turquoise blue Leutasch and is part of the famous Way of St James.

Afterwards we made a short detour to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and rode along the banks of the river Loisach and finally through the Murnauer Moos by bike back to our accommodation in Murnau.
On Friday we went to Munich for a day, where we visited the city center, the Japanese and Chinese gardens in the Westpark and the Olympic Park. Afterwards we had a coffee at Dalmayr and ate super tasty burritos in a "pure burrito", which I can really recommend to you!

We are very much looking forward to the time in Austria and also want to make trips to Slovenia from there.

As long as the current worldwide pandemic does not prevent us from doing so, the next trip for my friend and me will take place at the end of August. It will then go to Bavaria, Austria and Slovenia.
